If you’re interested in trees， history， and how they and the climate interact， this is the book for you。 Gets a bit dry in places， but overall it’s a good read， especially the first half of the book。 I learned a lot about trees I didn’t know。

Boeiend waar je overal op de wereld en in de geschiedenis terecht kunt met het lezen van jaarringen。 Het boek bouwt goed op van anekdotische weetjes – welk schilderij is het origineel en welke de kopie？ – naar de dendrochronologie als ondersteuning bij historische en klimatologische feiten。 De kracht is dat je exacte datering krijgt met jaarringen， eens je genoeg informatie verzameld hebt。 Stilistisch is het wat onregelmatig， maar inhoudelijk heel overzichtelijk。

Het begin van het boek duurde erg lang。 Het is erg technisch en tegelijk vertelt ze tig keer hetzelfde over de werkwijze。 Maar de tweede helft is zeer de moeite waard en geeft interessante inzichten in het verband tussen klimaat en geschiedenis。 Al met al dus toch een aanrader。

I had no idea we had a Belgian world renowned tree scientist。 Valerie Trouet has been all over the world and has discovered quite a few things about the past examining tree rings。 What an amazing book。 Informative and detailed， but never too technical to understand。 Perfect for amateur tree lovers。 I learnt so much on our history， on rise and fall of past civilisations and on our main weather patterns。
